Fortymile Caribou Regulations Changes for 2010

Nelchina Caribou Permits Update - Aug. 04, 2010
In an emergency hearing today, Superior Court Judge Carl Bauman has disallowed the 1000 additional Nelchina Tier 1 permits that the Board of Game had approved and the Department of Fish and Game planned to issue beginning Friday.

Board of Game Extends Unimak Wolf Hunting & Trapping - May. 26, 2010
In an effort to at least slow down a dramatic decline in the Unimak Caribou Herd, the Board of Game held an emergency meeting today and voted 4-1 to extend the hunting and trapping seasons for wolves on the western portion of Unimak Island.

The remaining fall hunting season for Fortymile caribou (RC860) in Zone 2, the roadless area between the Steese and Taylor Highways, will close at 11:59 pm Friday night, September 18, 2009.

MODIFICATION TO COMMUNITY HARVEST HUNT: Game Management Unit (GMU) 13 - Caribou - Aug. 05, 2009
Ahtna Tene Nene- has modified its plan for sharing the harvest from the 2009 Community Harvest Hunt for Unit 13 caribou to allow additional participation by those who are not residents of the villages of Chistochina, Cantwell, Gulkana, Gakona, Tazlina, Mentasta, Chitina, or Kluti Kaah, pursuant to a court order dated August 4, 2009. Southern Alaska Peninsula Caribou Herd Calf Survival Increases - Jul. 02, 2009
Work at restoring the Southern Alaska Peninsula (SAP) caribou herd has resulted in another bumper crop of calves and the removal of at least eight wolves. For the second year in a row, Alaska Department of Fish & Game biologists collared cows and newly born calves to track their survival and investigate any deaths.

Status of Intensive Management Programs Reported - Jul. 02, 2009
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) reports progress toward wolf population objectives of most of the six predator management projects in Alaska. Several of the programs are also showing direct benefits to ungulate populations. "We have survey information showing that numbers of moose have increased in the Nelchina Basin, in a portion of the Upper Yukon/Tanana area, and near McGrath," said Division Director Doug Larsen. "When weather cooperates and public participation is facilitated, we are seeing positive results."
