The State of Alaska/Federal winter registration permit hunt for White Mountains caribou in Units 20B, 20F and 25C will close at 11:59 pm on Thursday, December 10, 2009.
Registration hunt RC879 has a quota of eleven animals.
“Weather has been fairly mild, the harvest has been steady, and we expect the quota to be reached by Thursday,” said Fairbanks Assistant Area Biologist Tom Seaton. “Snow depths are low so far this winter, but hunters have been able to access caribou.”
The White Mountains herd is relatively small and supports an annual quota of 23 caribou, which is divided into a fall general hunt for any bull, and a winter registration permit hunt for any caribou.
Successful hunters must report within five days of the kill on the internet at http://hunt.alaska.gov or in person or by phone to the ADF&G office in Fairbanks (459-7272). Hunters who report by phone must also mail their permit reports or drop them off to the ADF&G office. Unsuccessful hunters must return their reports to the Fairbanks office or report online at http://hunt.alaska.gov by December 19, 2009.
Hunters are urged to obtain a receipt when they turn in their hunt reports or to mail them by return receipt. Permit holders who fail to report will not be allowed to obtain registration, drawing, or tier II permits next year, and may be cited for a violation of the Alaska hunting regulations.
Hunters with questions about the federal subsistence hunt should call (800) 478- 1456.
